Baryta carbonica is a type of homeopathic remedy widely used to treat children and the elderly who are suffering from a huge variety of symptoms that encompass physical, emotional, and mental impairments. It is also known as Barium carbonate, Bar-C and Baryta-carb. As barium easily dissolves in air, it is often difficult to obtain it in its pure form, so this remedy is taken from mineral barite and witherite, found mainly in ancient rocks. Preparations are in the forms of granules, tablets, and pellets that are available in many pharmacies.

Children who are thought to benefit from this remedy exhibit delayed growth development and mental retardation. Physically, they show abnormally large and bulging abdomens, big heads, and limbs and genitals that are small for their ages. Trisomy 21, commonly known as Down’s syndrome, and dwarfism are some of the medical conditions treated with it. These individuals usually have walking difficulties, slow thinking processes, and poor social skills.

Elderly people who may be prescribed Baryta carbonica frequently have senile dementia, a disorder showing deterioration of mental abilities usually associated with getting old. Stroke and Alzheimer's disease are the two most common causes of this deterioration. Symptoms include loss of memory, short attention span, confusion, language difficulties, irritability and impaired judgment.

The treatment may also be used by individuals who suffer from frequent infections of the tonsils. Looking at the back of the throat, the tonsils usually appear very red and swollen during a tonsillitis attack. Symptoms include difficulty and pain when swallowing, fever, muscle pains, headache and cough. Use of this remedy is thought to prevent subsequent attacks.

Baryta carbonica is also used for a good number of other health-related conditions, including prostate enlargement, seizures, muscle twitching, tuberculosis, recurring respiratory infections, baldness, and sexual dysfunction. Individuals who are less tolerant to very cold weather may use it as well. In addition, this homeopathic remedy may help prevent the worsening of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels and controlling blood pressure. It is also employed in the treatment of esophageal spasms, as well as pain in the larynx.

Timidity, shyness, lack of self-confidence and indecision are some of the emotional problems that may be helped with this homeopathic remedy. The profile of individuals who might use it are those who appear immature and have underdeveloped personalities. Homeopathic practitioners usually prescribe the remedy after determining the needs of the patients.
